Iodine (Lugol's)

Lugol's iodine is a solution containing iodine and potassium iodide that has multiple applications in medical diagnostics and treatment.

Studies have found that Lugol's iodine can help preserve DNA fragment lengths, which may be beneficial for certain biological studies. In oral cancer diagnosis, it aids in identifying areas of concern by staining tissues differently based on their iodine uptake. This characteristic is also useful in managing thyroid conditions like Graves' disease, where pre-operative treatment with Lugol's iodine has been reviewed to improve surgical outcomes. Additionally, the solution can be used effectively in chromoendoscopy for visualizing esophageal abnormalities and in cervical dysplasia detection when applied sequentially after acetic acid.

Lugol's iodine connects strongly to thyroid health management, oral cancer diagnostics, and endoscopic procedures for detecting various mucosal conditions.

The evidence comes from a variety of studies but is limited by the number of clinical trials directly assessing its long-term effects.
