BOLT score (breath-hold tolerance)
The BOLT score measures breath-hold tolerance and can offer insights into one's respiratory health and fitness levels. Studies have found that in highly-trained individuals, the BOLT score does not correlate with exercise performance. However, among active university students, there is an association between higher BOLT scores, better aerobic fitness, and increased physical activity levels. This suggests that while the BOLT score may not predict athletic performance in elite athletes, it could be a useful indicator of general health and fitness for more typical populations. Further research might explore how changes in breathing patterns affect overall wellness. The evidence base is still developing, so interpretations should be made with caution.
